China's newfound ocean awareness

China believes it cannot achieve sustainable development and national rejuvenation without going to the ocean and has initiated new maritime development strategies

The Jiaolong (Chinese: č›Ÿé¾å·ļ¼‰is a Chinese manned research deep-sea submersible. On July 22nd 2011 it reached a deapth of 4,027.31 meters depth in the northeast Pacific.
The State Council has successively approved and adopted development plans which will integrate the three economic zones through the Bohai Sea, the Yellow Sea, the East China Sea and the South China Sea, forming a marine-economy-based major coastal city cluster.

The Chinese manned deep-sea submersible Jiaolong has reached a depth of 5,143 meters in its third test dive, said the State Oceanic Administration (SOA). The submersible took photos, shot video, and made a topography scan at the ocean floor in the eastern Pacific for about 3.5 hours.

The Jiaolong, named after a mythical sea dragon, is the world's first manned submersible designed to reach the depth of 7,000 meters below sea level, according to Xu Qinan, chief designer of the submersible.

China, which initiated the Jiaolong projecin 2002, is the fifth country to send a man 3,500 meters below sea level, following the United States, France, Russia and Japan.

Aircraft carrier
Along with rapid economic growth, constant technological progress and rising comprehensive national strength, China's national interests are expanding, making the effective protection of national sovereignty and territorial integrity more urgent. China started developing its own aircraft carriers for the purposes of building a strong navy, which can effectively protect its national interests, and seeking appropriate means of safeguarding national security.

The Varyag, China's first aircraft carrier platform, started its first sea trial on Aug. 10. According to the plan, the first sea trial will not last long and related refitting and testing work will resume after it returns to the shipyard.

Varyag is an ex-Soviet Navy aircraft carrier constructed in the 1980s. The vessel construction stopped in 1992 after the break up of the Soviet Union. It remained in the Ukrainian shipyard unfinished until 1998 when a Macau-based Chinese company bought it for US$20 million. In March 2002, the vessel arrived in the Dalian Shipyard in northern China for refurbishment and has been stationed there since then. System installation of the vessel finally began in 2010/2011, and the vessel is expected to enter service with the PLA Navy as a training carrier around 2012.
