Bubbles to keep sharks and people apart

Using bubbles to scare off sharks is one of the methods being considered by researchers to address the high number of fatal shark attacks in Western Australia.

Fisheries Minister Norman Moore is considering a number of methods, including shark enclosures and underwater bubble machines, to protect people from sharks.

As this problem is getting more and more severe we’ve got to look at a whole range of options.

Mr Moore said a system of bubbles; beach wide shark repellents and swimming enclosures were all options which could be considered.

The State Opposition has pledged to build ocean pools in Albany, Cottesloe and a northern suburbs beach, if it wins government.

Mr Moore said the government would consider ocean pools but said they were a small part of a bigger approach to the issue and that he had recently received a report which suggested shark nets may not be an ideal solution.
