2012 Avalon Harbor Underwater Cleanup
On Saturday, February 25, 420 scuba divers participated in the 31st Annual Avalon Harbor Underwater Cleanup, collecting over 1.5 tons of trash from Avalon Bay. The event kicked off promptly at 9:30 am as the first divers entered the water and all divers were required to be out of the water by 11 am. The cleanup is the only time during the year that diving is allowed in the harbor. Following the dive, an awards ceremony was held which included raffle items and giveaways, and also various prizes were awarded for amusing categories of found trash. Individual divers and dive clubs from all over Southern California converge on Catalina Island for this festive annual event. This year’s cleanup helped raise $21,280 in support of the USC Catalina Hyperbaric Chamber and the Bob Given Fund for Ocean Conservation.
For more information please visit the Catalina Island Conservancy website and mark your calendar for next years dive on February 23, 2013.
